Project Description

The York Feedermain project included the design and construction of 14,770 lineal meters of Feedermain from the intersection at Hwy 50 and Rutherford Road to the Maple Reservoir at Keele Street and Teston Road via Rutherford Road, Weston Road, and Teston Road. The total feedermain pipe system included 12,620 lineal meters of 1800mm diameter, 1,390 lineal meters of 900mm diameter, and 760 lineal meters of 750mm diameter Concrete Pressure Pipe.

As part of this project, the feedermain was required to cross a live CP rail line and Highway 400. In total 138 lineal meters of 2.7 meter diameter tunnel and 100 lineal meters of 1200mm diameter tunnel was constructed to facilitate the crossing of these highly sensitive areas and avoid disruption of traffic flows. Additionally Dufferin was required to cross the Main Humber River and other tributaries of the Humber and Don Rivers. The crossing of the Main Humber River was achieved by open cut method with the use of interlocking steel sheeting that extended approximately 12 meters in depth and 80 meters in length. Pea Gravel sand bag cofferdams were installed in the River and around four 750mm diameter corrugated steel flume pipe crossing over and secured to the top of the sheet piles. All work was successfully completed to the satisfaction of the Ministry of the Environment and the Toronto Regional Conservation Authority.

The York/Peel feedermain project also included the design and construction of approximately 11 km of road to be completely reconstructed. Included in this road work were two bridges, several large sized cast-in-place box culverts, illumination, traffic signals, numerous driveways and sidestreets and major realignments of Rutherford Road and Teston Road.

Dufferin was also responsible for the design, coordination and construction of all utility relocations on the York/Peel feedermain contract. Rutherford Road, and Teston Road were widened, consequently all adjacent overhead powerlines were relocated to accommodate the new roadway. Additionally, several underground utilities throughout the project such as Bell Cable, Rogers Cable, gas and watermain utilities were relocated to avoid conflict with the new feedermain that was being constructed.
